US Muslims and Latinos get together in Ramadan with halal tacos

US activists organizes a campaign against Trump’s anti-immigration policies in the holy month of Ramadan to unite Muslims and Latinos in Orange County, California.

US activists in Orange County have mounted a campaign against Trump’s anti-immigration policies and Islamophobic rhetoric in the holy month of Ramadan, sharing food among Muslims and Latinos.

More than 400 local Muslims and their Latino neighbors took part in the inaugural event of the campaign Saturday night in the parking lot of a local mosque in Orange County, California.

In a bid to come up with a novel idea to promote unity among Muslim and Latino communities in the US county, the activists Rida Hamida and Ben Vazquez started the campaign dubbed “Taco Trucks at Every Mosque.”

Taco is a traditional Mexican dish and the initiative’s name insinuates response to a recurring statement from Marco Gutierrez, founder of Latinos for Trump, who said without Donald Trump in the White House there would be “taco trucks on every corner” in the US with the American culture in a swamp.

"This is perfect timing. The purpose of this month is to give charity, to grow our character and our inner lives and to nourish our soul through service. What better way to do that than by learning from one another?" asked coordinator Hamida who intends to host taco trucks distributing halal tacos at every mosque in Orange County.

The holy month of Ramadan provides Muslims with opportunities to feel closer to God and purify the soul. According to Islam teachings, fasting is not only abstaining from food and drink, but also from evil actions, thoughts and words.
